The 73% You Never See: Outbound in the Age of the Dark Funnel

Roughly 73% of the B2B buying journey now happens anonymously, before a prospect ever replies to a message or fills in a form. Most outbound teams are still built only to capture that remaining 27%, with many wrongly concluding they’re simply dealing with a small market.

This is an old problem with outbound that SDRs are still trying to reckon with. The winningest teams in 2026 are treating outbound as a way to shape demand inside the dark funnel, not just harvest what little is left at the end.

Why the Funnel Went Dark

The buyer’s journey has changed over the years. That’s a topic we’ve discussed a few times over recent months, but it’s also a story that shifts over time.

Buyers are increasingly value-focused and increasingly active in seeking out information independently. What’s most notable for SDRs is how many different ways they can seek out that information, and how rapidly this can shift. Word-of-mouth, review sites, and LinkedIn are all go-to options at this point, but they’re far from alone.

Peer communities, specifically Reddit, are now one of the most vital. Google and Reddit are thoroughly intertwined at this point in terms of their business operations and while that could change overnight, it’s nonetheless one of the biggest sources of information available to buyers and a place where your name needs to appear.

The popularity of AI assistants has also exploded in recent years. Though the function and focus of AI assistants varies from person to person, one of the most common uses is effectively an enhanced search engine. That means AEO and GEO are areas your business needs to consider.

The list goes on, ultimately giving buyers more answers to their questions, presented in more digestible ways. In turn, this means SDRs are no longer the point of contact for product information.

This results in teams optimizing for tracked clicks while starving the untracked research phase where buyers actually form decisions. Obviously, that’s not a good approach.

The Cost of Only Chasing Hand-Raisers

Waiting for a form fill means that you’re not entering the discussion until a buyer’s shortlist is already set. That’s not an ideal situation on any front.

When that form gets filled out, you’re now in a race where none of the competitors heard the starting gun. That typically means you’re left competing only on price and how quickly you can respond. For small businesses in particular, that translates to a huge disadvantage. Even if there is someone on-call 24/7, this is still a situation that results in reactionary decision-making, rather than proactive influencing.

The natural solution in the past was moving to a volume-led outbound strategies, but that’s not viable anymore. There are increasing limitations both on how many emails you can send and how many connections you can make on LinkedIn. That calls for a unique solution.

Outbound That Plants Demand, Not Just Captures It

The best solution to this that we've seen here at Zeekeo is creating demand for your product. It's not just a matter of acting when someone tells you they’re interested. We know that a little bit of brand-building goes a very long way.

So how is that done? The long story short is showing up in the channels where that anonymous research happens. That way, you’re more familiar with these buyers and they’re more familiar with you.

The first step is actually identifying where that research happens. The answer will vary based on your product and will also change over time, but knowing things like the most common review platforms used in your industry, the most popular subreddits, and the biggest personalities on social media is important.

From there, establish a presence in those spaces. If you’re a user discussing relevant topics, providing insight, offering your point of view, and talking with peers in the field, yours is a name they can remember. If you’re just making sales pitches without this, you're likely to be seen as a spammer.

All these interactions can be looked at as networking, touches, and brand-building, not just a response trigger. That makes your eventual outbound efforts with these prospective buyers both more natural and more effective when the time comes.

How to Measure What You Can’t Fully See

Dark-funnel activity doesn’t fit into a traditional attribution dashboard. That means outbound teams need to stop relying so heavily on last-touch attribution, which usually credits the final form fill while ignoring the interactions that shaped the buyer’s decision beforehand.

Instead, teams should track leading indicators that reveal whether outbound is creating familiarity and influencing demand, and how often that is happening.

Reply quality is one of the strongest. A thoughtful response, referral to another stakeholder, or request to reconnect later can be more valuable than a high volume of generic replies. Teams should also pay attention to inbound leads that mention previous emails, LinkedIn activity, content, events, or conversations. Those specific citations can uncover influence that software and AI don’t detect.

Another important pattern is the account that goes quiet and returns warm. A prospect may ignore several messages, disappear for weeks, and then re-engage with specific questions or a clear buying need. That is a classic dark-funnel signature. The outbound effort helped build recognition even though no trackable conversion happened at the time.

Outbound should still be judged by the metrics that matter, including positive reply rates, meeting-to-opportunity conversion, and revenue attribution. The key is to parse how this kind of outreach fits into those metrics.

The dark funnel isn’t a tracking problem that better software will eventually solve. It’s a fundamental buying reality that outbound teams must learn to design around. Buyers will continue researching anonymously, consulting peers, comparing opinions, and forming shortlists long before they identify themselves.

The teams that win won’t be those with the most complete attribution dashboards. They will be the ones that consistently deliver useful insights before buyers are ready to engage.

Better-qualified, insight-led outbound creates familiarity, demonstrates relevance, and gives prospects a reason to include your company in the conversation. It helps you reach accounts while their priorities are still taking shape, rather than after the shortlist has already closed.

The goal isn’t to illuminate every hidden interaction, but to build an outbound system that remains effective even when much of the journey happens in the dark.
